How to Make the Easiest Baked Potato Ever

Ok…the secret is…steaming! By slightly steaming the potatoes before they go in the oven, you’re retaining moisture and ensuring even cooking, which means no more dry potatoes.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Wash your potatoes, pierce them with a knife 5-6 times and place them in a steamer basket in a large pot. Steam until they’re fork tender.

  • Remove your potatoes from the steamer and let them cool slightly.

  • Transfer the potatoes to a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil and a healthy sprinkle of salt, rolling the taters around so they’re evenly coated.

  • Bake until they’re crispy and delicious.

Do I need to wrap the potatoes in foil before baking them?

Nope! Most of the time, aluminum foil is used to help the potatoes cook faster and create a steaming effect in the oven. Since we’re steaming beforehand, we’re not only locking in moisture, but cutting the baking time pretty much in half.

What should the oven temp be for these baked potatoes?

This recipe calls for a 400ºF degree oven. If you like super crispy skin, you could nudge it up to 425ºF, but you’ll want to keep an eye on your taters if you’re going higher.

How long should I bake them?

15-20 minutes should do ya just fine.

Can I prepare these baked potatoes on the grill instead?

Yes! These would be equally as delicious on the grill. After steaming, oiling and salting, place the potatoes on the grill over medium heat, turning occasionally until you’ve achieved your desired skin crispiness.

6 Russet potatoes, washed
Olive oil
Sea salt


Preheat oven to 400ºF. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water to a pot. Insert steamer basket into the pot and place washed potatoes into a steamer basket. Steam potatoes until they can be easily pierced with a fork, about 10-12 minutes for a smaller Russet potato.

Remove potatoes from steam and transfer to a baking sheet. Drizzle potatoes with olive oil and sea salt, evenly coating all sides. Baked potatoes until the outsides turn crispy and bowl, about 15 minutes.

Let potatoes cool slightly, serve with a pad of butter and freshly ground black pepper.
